Life as an apprentice at N.

Life as an apprentice at N: Real stories from our team

An apprenticeship is more than a qualification. It’s a journey, one filled with learning, growth, support, and moments that shape your confidence and career.

At N, apprentices are valued members of our nursery teams from day one. To give you a real insight into what life as an apprentice looks like, we asked members of our team to share their experiences, from their first day nerves to completing their qualifications and stepping into leadership roles.

Here’s what they had to say.

Hannan, Apprentice Educator (L3), N Angel

Recently marking her one-year anniversary at N.

Looking back on your first year at N, what has been the biggest moment of growth for you, personally or professionally?

“Looking back on my first year at N, my biggest moment of growth has been my confidence. When I started, I felt nervous, but over the year I have learnt to trust myself, support the children and communicate with families. Being surrounded by such a supportive team has not only made me feel proud of what I do but has helped me to achieve things I never thought I could.”

What has surprised you most about working in early years education since starting your apprenticeship?

“What has surprised me the most is just how rewarding early years education is. I didn’t realise how quickly you build strong bonds with the children, or how much you grow as a person alongside them. I never expected to feel so proud, emotional, and fulfilled by the small everyday moments. No two days are the same!”

How has N supported your development throughout your apprenticeship journey?

“From regular check-ins with my managers to hands-on support from my team, I have always felt encouraged and supported. I’ve been given time to learn, ask questions, and grow in confidence, which has made a huge difference to my journey. Feeling genuinely cared for and supported has made my apprenticeship journey so special.”

What would you say to someone considering an apprenticeship at N?

“I would say go for it. Choosing an apprenticeship at N has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. You are supported, encouraged, and valued while doing work that truly matters. If you’re passionate about early years and want to grow in a nurturing, professional environment, N is a great place to start your career.”

Bobbie, Room Manager, N Tunbridge Wells

Bobbie completed her apprenticeship with a Distinction and is now a Room Manager.

What attracted you to N?

“Firstly, my children attend N family, so we all descended on the nursery at the same time! I loved the atmosphere, and it was so obvious to see how much the educators enjoyed their jobs. It wasn’t just a job for them, it was a vocation and that was really infectious, to see that passion. That’s why I decided to try something new and begin my journey into child care.”

What has been your favourite thing about working for N so far?

“Since my start date at N I have found a new community of people that share the same passion. I’m at a later stage in my life in comparison to some of my peers, but we share the same outlooks and understanding when it comes to childcare and wanting to bring the best experiences into our rooms for our children. There’s such camaraderie here in Tunbridge Wells, and I’ve made such great friends over the last few years being here. Also, my mum works here too, which has given us such a great opportunity to share something together and bond us even more!”

Why did you decide to do the apprenticeship?

“I wanted to be equipped as much as possible with knowledge about children and Early Years. The apprenticeship allowed me to have focused learning and understanding of the children that were in my care day to day, and also developed my confidence as I was learning about new approaches and gaining more experience.”

How has the course impacted you?

“Completing the course has enabled me to grow and develop professionally. I am now a room manager of a preschool room, and I couldn’t be happier in my new role with my fabulous team!”

What would you say to someone considering an apprenticeship at N?

“2 words. Do it. And really dive into everything that the apprenticeship offers. You definitely get out of it what you put in, and the hard work definitely pays off.”

From a Manager’s Perspective

Shulamay, Nursery Manager, N Godalming

We also asked Shulamay to share her thoughts on what apprentices bring to the team and how managers support them in their journey.

“Apprentices bring fresh enthusiasm, new perspectives, and a willingness to learn that energises the whole team. As a manager, I support their growth by providing clear guidance, regular feedback with mentors, hands-on training, and opportunities to reflect and build confidence in every area of nursery practice.”

Amelia, Apprentice Educator (L3), N Whetstone

As Amelia reaches the end of her Early Years apprenticeship, she reflects on her experience across different rooms and age groups:

“I’ve learned lots of different skills as I’ve worked with each age group along the way, so in each room, I’ve learned different things and different ways to cater to the children. Throughout my apprenticeship, I’ve been supported by my mentor, my room manager, and Jane, who have all helped me with different things. Jane supported me by helping me think of new and exciting learning experiences tailored to specific age groups, as I’ve been working in most of the rooms throughout my time here at N.”
