Supporting a neurodivergent team at N

At N, we know that our people are at the heart of everything we do. Just as we nurture the individuality of every child in our nurseries, we also celebrate the individuality of every colleague. In our recent Great Place To Work survey, 100% of the team said they not only feel fairly treated regardless of their gender and sexual orientation, but also that they are proud to tell others they work at N. This is testament to the fantastic culture we have built at N and a firm belief that a diverse team makes us stronger – and part of that diversity is neurodiversity.

We are proud to employ and support team members who are neurodivergent, recognising the unique skills, perspectives, and creativity they bring. To help everyone thrive, we are committed to making our workplace – and the way we communicate – accessible, inclusive, and supportive.

Making communication accessible

We know that communication is not “one-size-fits-all.” Neurodivergent team members may process information differently, so we’ve made changes to the way we share updates, training, and team news. This includes:

  • Captions on videos – whether we’re sharing training content or team updates, all of our videos include captions. This makes information easier to follow and more digestible, especially for team members who prefer to read along.

  • Written resources alongside videos – we provide snappy, written summaries and step-by-step guides to complement video content. This gives our team the option to revisit information in their preferred format.

  • Visual clarity – we use clear visuals, flowcharts, bullet points, and structured layouts in all our communications. This helps reduce overwhelm and makes key messages easy to find at a glance.

  • Multiple formats – from emails to visual posters in team rooms, and face-to-face check-ins, we make sure that important updates are delivered in more than one way.

Building an inclusive culture

While practical adjustments matter, inclusivity is also about culture. We encourage open conversations, so colleagues feel comfortable sharing what helps them work at their best. Managers are supported to listen, adapt, and tailor their approach, creating a workplace where differences are respected and embraced.

Looking ahead

We know inclusivity is a journey, not a destination. By continuing to adapt our communication and listen to our team, we aim to create a workplace where neurodivergent team members feel supported, empowered, and able to thrive.

At N, our commitment to neurodiversity is part of our wider belief: when every team member is supported to shine, the whole nursery community benefits.
